Critter Notices

Critters is 23!

Yes, 23 years ago Critters was born. Wow! Thanks so much to all of you, who've made it such a resounding success!

Critters no longer accepting European Union members :(

It's with a heavy heart that I have to announce Critters can no longer accept people in the European Union as members. This is a result of the "GDPR" privacy laws going into effect. I'm a big fan of privacy, and applaud the general idea behind the GDPR, but the way it's implemented forces me to close the door to EU writers. [read more why...]

I'm very happy to announce that P&E has been handed off to a new caretaker! Check out the site for news and such. Hurrah!

I'm being interviewed live on public radio for Critters 20th birthday. For those who want to listen, it's on the 10am (Mountain time) show on Thursday, 11/19/16, on Colorado Public Radio - has streaming on the site or it's 90.1 FM in the Denver area. [Interview is done, you can listen on the site]

ReAnimus Acquires Advent!

ReAnimus Press is pleased to announce the acquisition of the legendary Advent Publishers! Advent is now a subsidiary of ReAnimus Press, and we will continue to publish Advent's titles under the Advent name. Advent was founded in 1956 by Earl Kemp and others, and has published the likes of James Blish, Hal Clement, Robert Heinlein, Damon Knight, E.E. "Doc" Smith, and many others. Advent's high quality titles have won and been finalists for several Hugo Awards, such as The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy and Heinlein's Children. Watch this space for ebook and print editions of all of Advent's current titles!

Network speeding up

I'm switching the connection over to a new, shiny 10X faster network because of all the load. There might be bits of downtime as your boxes learn new addresses and things. Should be brief. Let me know of any prolonged outages you see.

Preditors & Editors Changeover

With the very sad passing of Dave Kuzminski, who ran P&E, I've taken over the P&E duties. Lots of what I hope are improvements; check it out at

Critters Server is Dying has been Replaced

See important details here in my blog. Let me know if you find anything that isn't working right. (Manuscripts are now available for this week, FYI.)

Submit a Critters Critique

You may submit critiques either using this form or by email (don't forget the "#" and the manuscript number in the Subject).

Reminders... Remember to follow the standard critique format... You should abide by Critters' Diplomacy Standard at all times... All critiques are available to all members to read on the following Saturday if you want to see what others said.

Your Critters Workshop password:

Your E-mail address (If this is wrong, you won't get any credit!):

Your Name:

Manuscript Number : #
(Here is the queue, if you want to check on or copy&paste numbers, titles, names, etc.)

Manuscript Title :
(The title and author's name help me file things if, despite your best efforts, you typed in the wrong ms#.)

Manuscript Author's Name:

Is this intended for credit (if you only have a small number of comments, say no)? Yes      No

Would you like a copy of your critique emailed to you for your files? Yes      No

For sure      Not sure —I'm sure you've remembered to follow the Critters Diplomatic Phrasing rules, but just checking. [Such as not speaking in anger, not speaking as an expert, not saying "readers/editors/publishers (don't) like...", no "teacher's voice," not stating opinions as fact....; just relaying your personal reactions to the piece, framed as your opinion (absolutely including thoughts on elements that didn't work for you, but without vehemence or trying to persuade).]

Text of your critique

We have two methods to submit the text of your critique:

Try the file upload if your browser supports file transfers and you've saved your manuscript to a text (not Word/etc.) file...

(You might want to check it first, to make sure it's in the right format; then come back here.)

Critique (plain/ASCII/DOS text!) filename to send:

You can copy&paste your critique in the box below, if your browser does not support file uploads, or you're trying to copy and paste directly from a text editing / word processing app. (Or if you just want to type the critique in right here... that's... ok... but I really don't recommend it, since a slip of the fingers or a browser crash can lose all your work. It's really best to type into some file first, save it out, then copy&paste into this box.) And definitely be sure you have a copy somewhere before you hit submit in case of a browser or web site problem. Note that this box won't hold a critique longer than about 6,000 words; though that's far longer than most critiques):
